PURPOSES: to present information about daily life and struggle in the Occupied Territories of Palestine and Gaza, and to present commentary on the news that is not readily available in mainstream media.
A (too personal) word. This is not a blog about my political views. Politics has nothing to do with my support for my Palestinian friends and the Palestinian people in total. That is not quite correct, of course. The issue is political because only a change in the political climate of the United States — a move away from unthinking and indiscriminate political support of Israel — will ever liberate the Palestinians from the crushing, deadly occupation and destruction of the entire fabric of their lives. My support is based on a love of Palestine and its people that has grown since 1989 when a young man from Palestine was a student in my class on the History of American Music at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, MA, and we had long conversations about his family and his situation as a “man without a country.” My “activism” is based on my understanding of freedom, democracy, and — yes — morality. Period. My hope is to participate in any infinitesimal way I can to help others, especially Americans, to understand the immoral occupation by Israel of Palestine.

This is a one-person project. I am a retired college professor with two assets: time, and skill at researching. I welcome suggestions for material to include here, and I welcome comments. This site has already achieved a wider readership than I expected, but you can help it reach even more people – especially Americans.

Love the site! Can’t believe I only just discovered it, as it relates to my current book project about Palestinian literary culture. I am in Ramallah right now, in fact, doing research. Tomorrow morning I head to Nablus to learn about Fadwa Tuqan.

To say I am jealous would be such an understatement that I won’t say it.
I have been there three times, but have met very few literary types – mostly activist-types. I will follow your writing (have purchased “Song of the Caged Bird”) and tell others about it. Have a safe and productive journey.

Thanks. Song of the Caged Bird is the seed to the new project which will be a full-length “real” book. My current trip to Palestine is my third and final research trip in service of the book. I was here last spring and spent two months in Gaza last fall. I wrote about these travels on my blog on the book’s Facebook page, which I see you’ve discovered.
The literary types are easy to find if you know where to look and who to look for. And nearly every one of them was enthusiastic to tell his or her stories. I’ve heard some great ones.
I hope you don’t mind if I reference some of the poems you’ve reproduced on your blog. Those old anthologies are hard to find these days.
