“I  CLASP  YOUR  HANDS,”  BY  TAWFIQ  ZIAD
I call upon you
And clasp your hands.
I kiss the dust under your shoe
And say: I’ll lay down my life for you,
Grant you the gift of eyesight in my eyes.
The warm love in my heart I give to you,
For the tragedy I live
Is but mu share in your larger tragedy.

I call upon you
And clasp your hands.
I never stooped in my country
Nor will I ever be humbled.
Orphaned, naked and barefoot
I confronted my oppressors,
Carrying my blood in my palms.

I have never lowered my flags,
And have always tended the grass over my ancestors’ graves.
I call upon you, and clasp your hands!

a poem…resisting the conquerors!
I plant my fingers

in every flower pot:
a finger…resisting the conquerors!
I plant my blood

on every sidewalk,
on every roadsign:
a drop of blood…resisting the conquerors!
I plant my dreams
in the streets,
in the heads of passers-by:
an infant dream…resisting the conquerors!
I plant the names of my loved ones
in the streets,
on every tree, on every wall:
the name of a martyr resisting the conquerors!
I plant the colors of the flag
in the streets,
on every house,
and every window and door:
a color…resisting the conquerors!
I plant my children’s luggage
in the streets
at every roadblock,
at every checkpoint:
a suitcase…resisting the conquerors!
I plant my hands
in the streets,
on every corner:
a firm hand resisting the conquerors!

National pride and respect for international law are no match for political expediency when it comes to America’s “special relationship” with Israel. This was demonstrated again in November, when President Barack Obama and Congress agreed to consider $50 billion in military aid to Israel over the next 10 years—a hefty increase of $2 billion a year. The additional aid is intended as consolation to Israel for a nuclear agreement with Iran that makes Israel safer.
___As if this were not irrational enough, President Obama welcomed Netanyahu to the White House on Nov. 9 and again reassured him of America’s unwavering support. Of the lamp they shattered in my home,
Of the axe that destroyed a lily,
Of the fire that consumed a braid

I shall tell them of the unmilked ewe-lamb
Of the morning coffee―left undrunk
Of the mother’s dough left unbaked
Of the mud roof where the grass grows now
I shall tell the world

Neglected daughter of my neighbor
I still have your doll―put away
I have it so come back
Come back
On the train of the East wind

And Hanna
I have forgotten your features
Yet, I ache to remember
In my heart I hear your footsteps
How beautiful we were―together
My neighbor’s daughter, Hanna and I

How beautiful together we were
So why have our eyes
Become focused in foreign land?
And our hands roped
To this curse?
I shall tell the world―tell them
I shall tell the world!

“THE  PAGAN  FIRE,”  BY  TAWFIQ  ZAYYAD  (1929 – 1994)

Slowly,
I draw the thin thread of light
From the night’s entangled darkness,
Water the nursery of dreams
At the source of the torrent,
And dry the tears of my beloved
With kerchiefs of Arabian Jasmine.

Slowly,
I plant the scarce oases
In the burning sands,
And build for scoundrels
A life of justice and scented plentitude.
If, one day, I trip on the road,
My roots will guide me back.

Slowly,
For I am not like matches
That flicker once and die forever
But like a pagan fire,
I burn from the cradle to the grave,
And from my ancestors to my descendants.
My breath is as wide as the horizon;
I will master the craft of ants.

Slowly,
For we dictate
The course of history.
We have seen the end
Of many a tyrant;
Each gets what he deserves.
We lengthen their ropes,
Not to lengthen their lives, but to hang them.

ISRAEL’S  ‘SECURITY’  WALL  HAS  PROVIDED  LITTLE  SECURITY
Allison Deger and Philip Weiss
Dec. 2, 2015
The current violence in Israel and Palestine has demonstrated the ineffectiveness of the separation barrier, the concrete wall/barbed wire fence that Israel began erecting inside Palestine 13 years ago during the second intifada to provide security. The wall is as high as 25 feet in some places, and travels for hundreds of miles inside Palestine, mostly east of the Green Line, grabbing territory that was supposed to go to a Palestinian state under the Oslo accords.
___Most of the Palestinian attacks have taken place on the Israeli side of the separation barrier.

From here
From this purgatory
Of sorrow
In the Holy Land
The orphaned birds beseech
Mankind
From here
From Jenin
From Old Jerusalem
Alleluia.

Once
A Gaza tune of yearning
Played
Once
The sad refrain
Kindled tragedy
In refugee tents
Once
In Jerusalem
The little ones changed
We shall return
We shall return
Alleluia.

The birds nest on our roof
The sparrow flies
In the horizon
And in exile
Under the hot sun
In the wind
Hearts―eyes
Implored:
God of glory
Return us
Our trial
Has gone on too long!
Alleluia―Alleluia

And then it happened
The metallic eagles swept down
They did not bring the sons of Zion
To Zion
Not the remaining crowds
They did not bring
Pious psalms
To the Wailing Wall
God of Glory!
What did they bring?
Do not ask me
For in my voice a pagan flame
Burns
And listen O God of Glory
Listen to the outcry of a dispossessed people
We have been tested long enough
We have carried the weight of centuries
Long enough
―Why aren’t you convinced? ―
Our days of trial have been too long
So
Return us―Return us
Alleluia―Alleluia―Alleluia.

____It is time to look inwards at a rising culture of violence rather than facile explanations about individual bad seeds. Something is growing insidiously among us: racism, intolerance and hate. With attacks occurring more frequently, these seeds are no longer limited to one crazy individual, one extremist; instead they are indicative of widespread cultural seeds of racism, intolerance, and hate. These seeds have been cultivating for some time.

I may lose my daily bread, if you wish
I may hawk my clothes and bed
I may become a stonecutter, or a porter
Or a street sweeper
I may search in animal dung for food
I may collapse, naked and starved
Enemy of light
I will not compromise
And to the end
I shall fight.
You may rob me of the last span of my land
You may ditch my youth in prison holes
Steel what my grandfather left me behind:
Some furniture or clothes and jars,
You may burn my poems and books
You may feed your dog on my flesh
You may impose a nightmare of your terror
On my village
Enemy of light
I shall not compromise
And to the end
I shall fight.

Maureen Clare Murphy
Sept. 10, 2015
Israel’s “mapping procedure” reveals the profound control that it exerts on Palestinians living under its military rule.
____The mapping procedure unfolds much like Israel’s routine nighttime arrest raids in the occupied West Bank.
____Armed soldiers surround a Palestinian family’s home in the dead of the night. A squad bangs on the front door, waking everyone up. Once inside, the soldiers gather the residents into a single room.
____The family’s ID cards are inspected and recorded, as is how everyone is related, and their phone numbers.
____One of the family members may be taken by the soldiers as they go from room to room, and ordered to open closet doors, or lift up mattresses.
____But unlike during an arrest raid, once the soldiers have gone through the home, they leave and move on to the next one, telling the family that they can go back to sleep.

“AN  ADDRESS,”  BY  RASHID  HUSSEIN
―1―
Hairs as short as my life is
And a mouth as sensuous as my dreams
And fire is her voice
And so is the music
Yet she wants me to rest
On an easy chair
And keep my thoughts clean.

Oh my dear hunter!
What you ask is much more
Than all that I can give. . .
For the angels are dead
And I am not one of them.
―2―
A wine was her perfume
Generous was her bed
But her hopes were stronger,
And the strongest of all:
She wanted my address.
She asked: “Where lives the ‘Prince’?”
Then, I stood silenced
For I had no address.
I am a man in transit,
Twenty years in transit
A man who was even deprived
The right of having an address.

“TO  THE  BELOVED  MOTHERLAND,”  BY  FOUZI  EL-ASMAR
Night in my cell is life still in bud.
Beloved, you are like the breaking of light,
Like truth
Like a song dissolved into longing
Tearing apart the draped evening
Wreaking the flow of moans.

Beloved,
The joy of daylight
embraces the darkness
in my cell;
Persistent silence here
will turn the blade
of the swindler, the torturer
the thief of my childhood’s dreams
In the day’s heat.

Beloved!
In your name
dusk has touched my forehead
grey dreams flooded my head
But my will remains uncowed
for since I came to manhood
with my eyelashes
I have borne your ancient love
You remain my lighthouse
And only refuge.

Beloved,
We are here to nurse at life
Your full breast stretches the lightening
of hope and will
It shall flower a new prophecy
in our souls
It shall loosen the chains
and hurl light over our love.

Beloved,
The prison is a brief cloud
The bitter winds
of a cold journey
Which we must accomplish.

Our road is wrapped in sighs,
tears and thorns
In all that dark claws can weave
but our love shall triumph
At the end of the road.

There,
we shall meet with the sun
Its rays shall enter every house
Fill every crack
Flooding the mountains, hills and plains.

As I sit in a corner of my dim cell
lacing the seeds of the little light
stretching them to these lines for you
I was struck
with the joy of a child:
Beloved,
With all the might of their hatred
that tears this life apart
They forget they cannot put
my mind in jail.

“THREE POEMS TO PALESTINE,” BY ABDUL KARIM SABAWI
I.
They spread the glad tidings
When they were with Him at The Last Supper
And before He walked
Dragging His cross on a path of thorns and stones
They surrounded Him like a halo.
Swearing to their Belief, their Faith,
They gave Him their vows,
But their eyes became heavy and they slept,
And they left Him.
Alone, with heavy heart,
He drank of the cup from which He had abstained.
His blood then felt the chill of Death,
And Sorrow’s bitter taste burned in His mouth.
Before the dawn
One betrayed Him
One denied Him.
And the others ran away.
